Why become a MoveAbility Coach?

Do you want a chance to learn more about inclusive recreation or movement therapy fields?

Are you interested in pursuing a career in special education or working with children with disabilities?

Do you want to become a better coach by learning about adaptive instructional strategies?

Join our amazing volunteer team and be apart of something that really "moves" you!

Our mission is to create opportunities for quality, adaptive recreational programming by providing sports and arts classes and events to children with special needs. Our members span in age from four to eighteen and we help to support a wide range of physical, behavioural or developmental disabilities.

BECAUSE of our volunteers, our participants can enjoy the benefits of dance, gymnastics, fitness, yoga, rock climbing, circus school and much more! Many of our members require extra support and encouragement which is why our volunteers make so much of an impact! When you volunteer with MoveAbility, you will be joining a team of dedicated and talented people whose support enriches the lives of so many others.  Get ready for some fun and rewarding classes, full of games and positive physical activity for every child to develop and find what they truly enjoy and feel confident doing!

VOLUNTEERS are the backbone of our programs. Few programs could happen without your help, and your dedication and caring are truly appreciated. A good volunteer experience is one that works for you as well as us; we will try to match you with the sport or activity you want. You will always be working with a Lead Coach that will be there to guide you and lead the class. Our volunteers help in setting up for and clearing up after programs, assisting participants with activities or otherwise helping the instructor as required, and always listening, cheering and encouraging! Volunteers are not responsible for any programming or safety concerns, and can not replace a Lead Coach.

Volunteer opportunities vary from season - season; weekly class times and age ranges depends on registration per session. There are 4 sessions per year (Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer) each 8-12 weeks long. We also have a variety of one-time-only special events which vary from season to season. Please contact MoveAbility for a list of our current programs and class schedules to see which program best fits YOUR needs!

We have many volunteers who join us to acquire volunteer hours and current work experience! Every Lead Instructor has a Record Volunteer Hours sheet to track hours manually or this can also be done online if access to a Google account.

You must commit to a minimum of one session (8-10 weeks) in a specific activity and after, you can change activities or resign with a letter of recommendation*. Letter of Recommendation: MoveAbility provides recommendations and referrals for many kinds of professional references for our dedicated volunteers! If you need an official reference document for professional development opportunities or job placements, simply request one from your Lead Instructor before the end of the session.

This is an important element in providing the highest quality of service, and we will do whatever we can to assist you in performing your duties. Volunteers will be given a Coaching Handbook to be used as a training tool, as well as a Coaching Lanyard to be used in class. Every volunteer is encouraged to participate in any Adaptive Coaching workshops offered by MoveAbility at no cost.

Coaches will also be provided with a purple MoveAbility t-shirt before your first class at no added cost! Whenever possible, please wear the shirt, or the colour purple to every class so families and participants can easily identify MoveAbility coaches.

THANK YOU for considering volunteering with MoveAbility!
